The third annual Benefit Gala was held on February 27, 2008, at the New York Marriott Marquis. Attendance topped 500 guests, with former Yankee catcher and YES network reporter, John Flaherty, acting as Master of Ceremonies.

The live auction, hosted once again, by actor Tony LoBianco, and assisted by former New York Met, Daryl Strawberry, was well received.  Additionally, over fifty sports memorabilia items were donated by Steiner Sports, with all profits going to the 2011 World Police and Fire Games.

Following the previous year’s template, a number of individuals were honored for their contributions, or service, to the community.  This year’s honorees included: New York City Sports Commissioner, Kenneth Podziba; the founder and Chairman of Steiner Sports Marketing, Brandon Steiner; the founder and managing partner of Xperience Communications, Joseph Wenke; State Senator Martin Golden; former New York Ranger, Brian Leetch; and former New York Giant, George Martin.

Unavailable, due to the fact that he was continuing his walk across America to raise awareness for 9/11 rescue and recovery workers, teammate Harry Carson accepted the award for Outstanding Sportsmanship on behalf of George Martin.  FDNY Chief of Department, Salvatore Cassano, was also on hand to pay tribute to fallen firefighter Vic Navarra. Vic’s selfless dedication to service, and passion for life, exemplified the characteristics of a true hero.

This being our third benefit dinner, we have hit the halfway point. The continued backing of numerous individuals, groups, and organizations has contributed greatly to the success of our events. Without your help and support, we cannot accomplish this monumental task.  We look forward to seeing everyone at our next event, as we help celebrate humanity through sport.
